Reams Road Elementary

Summary:

Reams Road Elementary is a public elementary school in Richmond, Virginia, serving 564 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Chesterfield County Public Schools district, which is ranked 82 out of 130 districts in Virginia and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Reams Road Elementary faces significant challenges compared to nearby schools and the district and state averages. The school has a more diverse student population, with a higher percentage of African American (25.71%) and Hispanic (25.18%) students. However, Reams Road consistently underperforms on standardized tests, with its 5th-grade math proficiency rate at just 14.06% in the 2023-2024 school year, compared to 53.58% for Chesterfield County and 67.98% for Virginia. The school's statewide ranking is low, placing 884 out of 1,114 Virginia elementary schools in the 2023-2024 school year, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. This performance is particularly concerning for certain student subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, and low socioeconomic status students.

The challenges faced by Reams Road Elementary are not shared by all schools in the Chesterfield County district. Nearby schools, such as J.B. Watkins Elementary, Crestwood Elementary, and W.W. Gordon Elementary, significantly outperform Reams Road on academic measures. The high percentage of economically disadvantaged students (82.09% receive free or reduced-price lunch) and the school's diverse racial makeup may be contributing factors to the lower academic performance. Addressing these issues will require a targeted and comprehensive approach to support the unique needs of Reams Road Elementary's student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Reams Road Elementary school is a great school for students of various racial backgrounds. It has a very supportive staff and the adminstration stands behind their students. Reams has many fine qualities but it could improve on its support with extracurricular activities. Students are part of Reams on many different levels and the sports is the one area that Reams lacks support. Reams Elementary would be a 5 star school if the sports and the academic could find a way to share the victory and all that Reams has the potential to offer. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
