Riverview Elementary/Middle

Summary:

Riverview Elementary/Middle is a public school located in Grundy, Virginia, serving grades PK-8 with a total enrollment of 750 students. The school is part of the Buchanan County Public Schools district, which is ranked 60 out of 130 districts in Virginia and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Riverview stands out for its high percentage of white students (96.53%) compared to the state average for Virginia elementary schools (around 50%). The school outperforms the district and state in several academic areas, including 8th grade Algebra I, 3rd-7th grade Mathematics, and 3rd-7th grade English Reading. However, Riverview struggles in 8th grade Mathematics, Science, and 8th grade English Reading, where they underperform the district and state averages. Despite having a very high percentage of students (around 88%) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, Riverview's low-income students perform better than the district and state averages in several subjects, suggesting the school is effectively supporting these students.

Riverview's statewide ranking has fluctuated over the years, ranging from 542 out of 1,114 Virginia elementary schools in 2023-2024 to as low as 980 out of 1,110 in 2013-2014. The school's performance is generally stronger than the nearby Council Elementary/Middle and Twin Valley Elementary/Middle schools in the Buchanan County Public Schools district, particularly in Mathematics and English Reading.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I don't like the way this school treats their disabled students, regular students, employee's or the parents of disabled and regular students. This school is only out to help people who they personal know or like. If your a nobody (so to say) then good luck getting them to work with you to your benefit. This school only operates on personal matters that help them out not on a business level to help the students and their education. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
