Sterling School

Summary:

Sterling School is an elementary school located in Tooele, Utah, serving grades PK-6 with a student population of 829. The school is part of the Tooele District, which is ranked 69 out of 98 districts in Utah and is rated 2 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

According to the key insights, Sterling School consistently ranks in the bottom half of Utah elementary schools, with significantly lower performance on RISE assessments compared to the Tooele District and Utah state averages across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2023-2024, only 28.3% of 3rd graders at Sterling School were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 34.3% in the Tooele District and 46.7% statewide. The school also has a relatively high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 39.57% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in 2022-2023.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as Stansbury Park School, Rose Springs School, and Overlake School, generally perform better academically than Sterling School, with higher proficiency rates on RISE assessments and higher overall school rankings. However, Sterling School's higher per-student spending of $8,529 in 2018-2019 does not appear to translate into better academic outcomes for the students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The people in the office don't seem to know how to run a school don't seem to enjoy their jobs either my daughter has been going there for 2 years now hoping it would get better with the new principal but I'm definitely not sending her back there another year. Seems to be quite a bit of rude kids there as well that don't get disciplined Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
