Maria Montessori Academy

Summary:

Maria Montessori Academy is a public charter school in Ogden, Utah that serves 379 students from kindergarten to 9th grade. The school has a predominantly White student population (74.67%), with significant Hispanic representation (19%) and smaller percentages of other racial groups.

While Maria Montessori Academy offers a unique Montessori-based educational approach, its academic performance lags behind nearby charter schools. The school's test scores are significantly lower than state averages across various subjects and grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, only 17.1% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state average of 46.7%. Similarly, the school's 4th grade math proficiency rate of 14.6% is much lower than the state's 49.9%. Additionally, Maria Montessori Academy has a relatively high student-teacher ratio, ranging from 20 to 20.1 over the past three school years, which is higher than the ratios at some nearby schools, such as Quest Academy (17.2) and Venture Academy (18.1).

When compared to nearby charter schools, Maria Montessori Academy's test scores are consistently lower across all subjects and grade levels. For example, Quest Academy, located about 10 miles away, has significantly higher proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. The school's relatively low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 17.94% to 26.22%, may also indicate potential equity concerns that warrant further investigation.

Open Quote My daughter is currently a 7th grader in the junior high at Maria Montessori Academy and has attended MMA continuously since pre-school. Through those years, we have experienced all the highs and lows that came with a changing school environment. My daughter has had consitantly amazing teachers and assistants that have helped mold her into an exceptional young person. She has exceeded in all her academic studies and has the grades to show for it. The faculty always pushes her to do and be her best and the compassion they show is unparalleled. The current administration and junior high program has been great for my daughter and we look forward to the years to come. Close Quote

Open Quote We love our school, we love our school, we love our school!! Classes are small, and you have at least 2 teachers in each class. So the kids get one on one teaching! And since the have 3 grades in each class (example 1st, 2nd, 3rd) it give the older kids the chance to teach the younger kids! And we all know when you teach something, you learn so much more then as a student!!
Our new director all the way from Hawaii, is all in and has made some amazing things with the school!! Where some schools may have had a hard year, here at Maria Montrssori, we haven’t skipped a beat! And with their added safety enhancements, we have yet to have anyone get sick at school!! Simply amazing! Close Quote

Open Quote I am a Jr. High student at MMA, and I wanted to share the amazing school experience that I have had... I have enjoyed my time at this school and learning all of the amazing things it has to teach me. Being at MMA I have learned many new things. I love all of my teachers and all of the time that they take to let me know that I am important and I matter. All of the teachers make sure that each one of the kids is getting exactly what they need and that is super important. The office ladies and the director are awesome and always make me smile! Open Quote We chose Maria for our son after he thrived in a Montessori preschool and we did not want him to get bored in areas he excelled. We have nothing but a positive experience with all his teachers. They are all very passionate about teaching and the montessori method. My son has had a very positive learning experience here! Mr. Hirokawa has been a wonderful addition to this school as well! We love how he engages so much with the students! Close Quote

Open Quote My children have been at this school since the day it opened. We live this school. The student is with the same teacher for 3 years and so they really get to know the student. The teachers are so invested in my child's success. I love how wonderful the community is at the school, all the staff know my kids and they all are committed to reach and every student. Open Quote My daughter started at this school in 3rd grade she is now a 7th grader! When I moved her to this school, it was the best decision I could have ever made. She is excelling academically and emotionally! This school focuses on all aspects of a child and prepares them to go out into the world. The teachers are amazing and really care about their students. The office staff is always so helpful and kind. I would definitely recommend this school to parents! Close Quote

Open Quote Crappy school. wouldn't recommend. especially if you are a divorced parent. They are only mother friendly. Also they have absolutely no organization as far as field trips go. I dropped my daughter off and they didn't even take a roll or anything. It took me 30 minutes just to find her teacher and then her teacher was rude! When I went to pick her up it took another 30 minutes to find her. Close Quote

Open Quote Great school. My three kids have gone there. Two graduated. My oldest is pulling a 3.9 in High School after being at Montessori. The teachers are great. It is a very hands on learning environment which was good for my kids who have a problem sitting still in a desk all day. Close Quote

Open Quote They combine several grades together so that the kids can excel. However if your child is already accelerated they are left behind to help the lower grade kids. Math is taught with manipulatives and kids are not taught how to show their work. My child went to Montessori six months and I had to spend another nine months homeschooling to catch him up to the grade he was suppose to be in. it was like he wasnt in school at all, but the teachers were raving about what a good helper he was. kids arent an experiment, they each deserve to excel. Not the best of ideas to say the least. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
