Midvalley School

Summary:

Midvalley School is an elementary school located in Midvale, Utah, serving 549 students in grades K-5. It is part of the Canyons School District, which is ranked 27th out of 98 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating.

Midvalley School faces significant challenges compared to the district and state averages. Its academic performance, as measured by the RISE assessment, is significantly lower across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, only 35% of 3rd-grade students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 51.9% in the Canyons District and 46.7% statewide. Additionally, Midvalley School has a very high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 99.64% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in 2022-2023. As a result, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Utah elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

However, Midvalley School's relatively stronger performance for specific student subgroups, such as Hispanic students and students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, suggests that the school may be employing effective strategies to support these populations. In contrast, the nearby Peruvian Park School, which is ranked 6th out of 561 Utah elementary schools, has much higher proficiency rates across all subject areas. This indicates that the Midvalley community may be facing unique challenges that are impacting student achievement, despite the school's higher per-student spending compared to nearby schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
