Dual Immersion Academy

Summary:

Dual Immersion Academy is a public charter elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Salt Lake City, Utah, with a student population of 471 as of the 2022-2023 school year. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Utah elementary schools over the past decade, with a current ranking of 499 out of 561 schools and a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Dual Immersion Academy significantly underperforms the state average on standardized tests across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 30.4% of 3rd graders were proficient in English Language Arts compared to the state average of 46.7%. In math, the proficiency rates ranged from 7% for 7th graders to 44.4% for 3rd graders, all well below the state averages. While the school ranks relatively higher for its Hispanic student population, it ranks very low for English Language Learners, suggesting the school may be struggling to effectively support its diverse student needs. Additionally, the school has seen a significant increase in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, from 23.64% in 2020-2021 to 63.27% in 2022-2023, which likely contributes to the school's academic challenges.

Interestingly, Dual Immersion Academy's performance is significantly lower than the nearby Wallace Stegner Academy, a charter school that ranks 351st out of 561 schools and has much higher proficiency rates across all subjects and grade levels. This suggests that the charter school model can be effective in the area, but Dual Immersion Academy is struggling to replicate that success. The school's ranking has also steadily declined over the past decade, from 556th out of 576 schools in 2012-2013 to its current 499th out of 561 ranking, indicating that the school is facing significant challenges in maintaining enrollment and community trust.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school has great teachers, and a wonderful curriculum. We have been a part of this school for 3 years now, beginning with the great preschool program that is offered at the school. Neither my wife or I speak or understand much Spanish. We have attempted to learn and keep up with our child as he learns at the school, but my child surpassed us in his Spanish abilities during his first year at The Dual Immersion Academy. He is now reading, writing, communicating and having fun in both Spanish and English! This school teaches children to embrace diversity, and teaches the children both English and Spanish - at a time when their minds are equipped and ready to absorb a new language. We couldn't be happier with the school, and I'm so glad that we found it! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
