Willis High School

Summary:

Willis High School is a public high school located in Willis, Texas, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 2,521 students. The school is part of the Conroe Independent School District, which is ranked 590 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Willis High School has a more diverse student population compared to some nearby schools, its academic performance, as measured by STAAR EOC test scores, is generally lower than the state and district averages. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's proficiency rates ranged from 32.66% in Algebra I to 61.7% in U.S. History, compared to the state averages of 44.73% and 69.1%, respectively. The school's four-year graduation rate has improved, increasing from 85.7% in 2018-2019 to 91.0% in 2022-2023, but it is still slightly lower than the state average. Additionally, the school's dropout rate, while decreasing, remains higher than the state average.

When compared to nearby high schools, such as Caney Creek High School, Ischool High At The Woodlands, and College Park High School, Willis High School generally performs lower academically, with lower test scores and graduation rates. However, it has a more diverse student population. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with Gifted and Talented students performing relatively well, while African American, Hispanic, and English Language Learner students perform significantly lower. These challenges may be exacerbated by the school's lower spending per student and higher student-teacher ratio compared to some of the higher-performing nearby schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I went to WHS all 4 years of high school. It was the greatest experience of my life. I had Mr. Patton (the coolest principle ever) as my principle, and was sad to hear he left the school after my graduation. I was involved in all kinds of extracurricular activities and AP classes. I can honestly say I am thankful for my teachers at that school, all of which actually cared for me personally and in classes. Best school in the area! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
