Whitney High School

Summary:

Whitney High School is a public high school serving 441 students in grades 9-12 in Whitney, Texas, which is part of the Whitney Independent School District. The school has a predominantly White student population (67.12%), with significant Hispanic (23.58%) and African American (5.9%) representation.

Whitney High School has several strengths, including consistently high 4-year graduation rates (88.3% to 94.8%) and low dropout rates (0.4% to 1.2%). However, the school's performance on STAAR End-of-Course exams is mixed, with strong results in subjects like Biology and U.S. History, but lower proficiency in Algebra I compared to state averages. The school's performance also varies across different student subgroups, with Hispanic and English Language Learner students performing relatively well, but African American, Multi-racial, and Gifted and Talented students lagging behind. With 59.64% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, Whitney High School serves a higher proportion of students from low-income families.

When compared to nearby high schools, such as Meridian High School, Clifton High School, and West High School, Whitney High School generally performs on par or slightly below in terms of test scores and graduation rates. However, it has a higher percentage of students from low-income families, which may contribute to the observed academic disparities. To address these challenges, the school should focus on targeted interventions and support to ensure equitable educational opportunities for all students, particularly those in underperforming subgroups.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school has been terrible. My children are'nt even allowed to go to the bathroom when they need to. There is not enough time be going while you have to nearly run to your next class to not be late. A majority of the teachers jsut play in their phones and computers all day anyway, why not let the child go to the bathroom? Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
