Weslaco High School

Summary:

Weslaco High School is a public high school in Weslaco, Texas, serving 2,553 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Weslaco Independent School District, which is ranked 483 out of 968 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Weslaco High School faces several challenges, including a below-average statewide ranking, with the school consistently ranking between 1,112-1,299 out of around 1,900-2,000 high schools in Texas over the past several years. The school maintains a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger, indicating below-average performance compared to other Texas high schools. Weslaco High School's performance is particularly weak for its White, English Language Learner, and Special Education student populations, ranking in the bottom 25% and 50% of Texas high schools for these subgroups, respectively. In contrast, the school's Hispanic student population performs relatively better, ranking in the top 50% of Texas high schools.

While Weslaco High School performs better than some of its immediate neighbors, such as South Palm Gardens High School, it lags behind the performance of higher-performing charter schools in the region, such as Idea College Prep and Idea Weslaco Pike College Preparatory. Addressing the school's socioeconomic factors, which include a high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, and resource constraints, such as slightly lower per-student spending and a higher student-teacher ratio, may be crucial in improving Weslaco High School's overall academic outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Primarily an unpleasant experience. Often smells foul and the restrooms lack any basic amenities for hygiene. Money is allocated in all the wrong places and hallways were filled to the brim due to poor infrastructure. Staff isn't good and the atmosphere feels ugly. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
