Westwood High School

Summary:

Westwood High School is a public high school located in Palestine, Texas, serving grades 9-12 with a student population of 438. The school is part of the Palestine Independent School District, which is ranked 831 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Westwood High School faces several challenges, including a consistently low statewide ranking, with the school ranking between 1144 and 1383 out of around 1900-2000 high schools in Texas over the past 7 years. The school has maintained a 1-2 star rating from SchoolDigger, indicating below-average performance compared to other Texas high schools. Westwood High School struggles to perform well across various student subgroups, ranking particularly low for Hispanic, White, and English Language Learner students, though it performs better for its African American and Special Education student populations. The school's STAAR EOC (End of Course) proficiency rates are consistently below the state and district averages across all tested subjects, ranging from 18.89% to 56.36% in 2023-2024, compared to the state averages of 44.73% to 69.1%.

When compared to nearby schools, such as Cayuga High School, Neches High School, and Slocum High School, Westwood High School generally underperforms in terms of statewide rankings, academic achievement, and student group performances. These nearby schools have higher proficiency rates on STAAR EOC exams and higher graduation rates with lower dropout rates. The challenges faced by Westwood High School may be attributed to factors such as its high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, suggesting a relatively economically disadvantaged student population, as well as lower spending per student compared to some nearby schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Discipline is at best inconsistent and usually non-existent or far LESS than the punishment a kid should get, because kids rregularly disrespect teachers (and parents many times) some parents demand their kids be passed for nothing, and admin pressures teachers to pass kids too, as there are few real "standards" for all teachers to meet (a very few try), and teachers with standards have largely left the district because admin does not value them. Admin tries to put tons of window dressing on how low the school is...but if you check Schooldigger's ratings, you'll see this school's performance has dropped badly from 2018 to now, which means ALL of the current admin team that is not a new hire needs to be fired and replaced, because the school has been on a downward spiral for years and no one cares to fix it. It's shocking enough to hear parents tell me that they had kids making Cs and Fs at Palestine ISD and then come to Westwood and make As and Bs! Both can't be right, and if you've got half a brain in your head, it's obvious what's REALLY going on. Avoid enrolling your child in this district if you can! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
