Sheldon Lake Elementary

Summary:

Sheldon Lake Elementary is a public elementary school serving grades 1-5 in the Sheldon Independent School District (ISD) in Houston, Texas. The school has a student population of 665 and a predominantly Hispanic (57.14%) and African American (32.33%) racial makeup.

Despite the school's relatively high spending per student of $10,170, Sheldon Lake Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools and significantly underperforms compared to state and district averages on STAAR tests across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in STAAR Reading ranged from 32.38% (3rd grade) to 41.96% (4th grade), compared to the state averages of 48.85% and 50.66%, respectively. The school's performance is particularly low in STAAR Mathematics and Science, with proficiency rates well below the state averages.

Sheldon Lake Elementary's academic struggles are not unique, as nearby schools within the Sheldon ISD, such as Sheldon Elementary and Royalwood Elementary, have higher STAAR proficiency rates and better statewide rankings. However, Sheldon Lake Elementary's performance is comparable to or slightly better than some other nearby schools in the Galena Park ISD, such as L.E. Monahan Elementary and Dr. Shirley J. Williamson Elementary, which also serve predominantly low-income and minority student populations.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Our experience has been horrible since the very beginning of 5th grade (2021-2022). The teacher lost my daughter on the very first day of school. Her teacher called to confirm that I would pick my daughter up from school but when I arrive, she was nowhere to be found. It took over half an hour before that same teacher realized that he put my daughter on the bus instead. My daughter was traumatized not only being lost and alone in an unfamiliar place but even chased by a dog when she got off the bus. We had just moved and it was her first day in this district.
The second week of school my daughter's secondary teacher, Ms. P--m-n, was verbally abusive to my child and discouraged her from succeeding. The teacher was constantly degrading my daughter and referred to her as a "follower". I immediately went to the school board to report the teacher's behavior but was redirected back to Sheldon Lake Elementary's Principal - who took no corrective action against the teacher and would not even put a note in her file regarding the verbal abuse. However, after much pleading, I was able to move my daughter to a new class.
When enrolling, the school was informed of my daughter's dyslexia and that she needed accommodations to help with it. However, it took over 3 months before the accommodations were made by the school. I am extremely disappointed in this school's attentiveness. I put my trust in S.L.E.'s learning system but became a variance. Although the school attempted to fix their mistake by moving my daughter into a dyslexia class, so much time had passed that ultimately her education suffered and she fell behind.
On top of all this, there have been reports of S.L.E's students bringing marijuana and ammunition to the school. Safety at S.L.E is extremely lacking and needs to be addressed immediately. Finally, I decided enough is enough and withdrew my daughter from this school but obtaining the withdrawal papers has been a hassle. First, I was lied to saying there was no paperwork I could obtain and then suddenly they had them ready for me to pick up. Since Sheldon Lake Elementary has failed to properly accommodate, and educate my child as well as maintain the safety and well-being, I will be homeschooling her from now on. Seeing how bad the Elementary already is, I can only imagine the dangers and struggles in future grades. Even my daughter felt that the school teachers were extremely disrespectful and was afraid to attend school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
