Madison Elementary

Summary:

Madison Elementary is a public elementary school in San Antonio, Texas, serving 442 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD), which is ranked 811 out of 968 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Madison Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools, with significantly below-average performance on state assessments across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2023-2024, only 33.33% of 3rd graders and 35.9% of 4th graders scored proficient or better on the STAAR Reading test, compared to state averages of 48.85% and 50.66%, respectively. The school's student population is predominantly Hispanic (96.15%) and over 90% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage. However, the school's English Language Learner (ELL) students perform relatively better than the overall student population, suggesting the school may be providing effective support for this group.

The academic struggles at Madison Elementary are not unique, as many nearby schools in the San Antonio ISD and Edgewood ISD, such as Maverick Elementary and Roosevelt Elementary, also perform poorly on state assessments and have high percentages of economically disadvantaged students. Some local charter schools, like Woodlawn Academy and Fenwick Academy, show slightly better academic performance, but still struggle compared to state averages.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Madison Elementary focuses more on the challenged student. They do not have a system where the advanced student and the average student and the challenged student are separated so that they can learn at their pace. It's fine that no student is left behind but the advanced student is left alone without progressing so that the slower learning student can catch up. The staff at Madison is ok for the most part but they do have their share of ignorance. I have witnessed teachers belittle students and the students do not get a recess. They cannot even talk in the lunch room. Students are told to take naps or read books in the cafeteria after they're done eating. This is ridiculous! Some teachers seem like they don't even like their jobs and do not have patience with students. They should have chosen a different profession! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
