Wells Branch Elementary

Summary:

Wells Branch Elementary is a public elementary school in Austin, Texas, serving around 500 students in grades PK-5 and part of the Round Rock Independent School District.

While Wells Branch Elementary has a significantly higher Hispanic student population (66.8%) compared to surrounding schools, it consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's STAAR test scores are significantly lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels and subjects, and over 60% of its students receive free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a higher level of economic disadvantage. Despite spending more per student ($12,556 in 2020-2021) than the district and state averages, the school's academic performance does not seem to reflect this higher investment.

The performance gap between Wells Branch Elementary and the surrounding schools, such as Summitt Elementary, Ruth Barron Elementary, and Idea Round Rock Technical Academy, appears to be widening over time. The school struggles to support the academic achievement of its subgroups, particularly African American, Hispanic, and English Language Learner students, who consistently rank in the bottom 10-20% of their respective subgroups statewide. Addressing the unique needs of the student population and optimizing resource allocation may be crucial in driving positive change at Wells Branch Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Arts integration including theater, dance, art, and music as well as the opportunity for violin lessons makes my child excited to go to school every day. He also benefits from dual language instruction, daily dyslexia support, after school enrichment, and the math acceleration talented and gifted program. Other school programs like garden, science fair, Bluebonnet books, UIL competition, etc offer further opportunities for students to engage their interests. We feel the school serves a diverse student population well. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
