Northwood Hills Elementary

Summary:

Northwood Hills Elementary is a public elementary school in Dallas, Texas, serving 385 students in grades K-6 and part of the Richardson Independent School District (ISD).

Northwood Hills Elementary has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with a higher percentage of Hispanic (53.77%) and African American (16.1%) students. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by STAAR test scores, is generally lower than the district and state averages across various grade levels and subjects. For example, the school's 3rd grade reading proficiency (47.83%) was lower than the district (52.47%) and state (48.85%) averages. Northwood Hills also struggles to support its special education and English Language Learner student populations, as evidenced by their low rankings in these subgroups compared to the state. The school's high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 58.05% to 65.71% over the past three school years, suggests that socioeconomic factors may be contributing to the school's lower academic performance.

In comparison, the nearby schools, such as Bowie Elementary, Mohawk Elementary, and Spring Creek Elementary, generally outperform Northwood Hills Elementary in academic achievement, with higher STAAR test scores and higher rankings from SchoolDigger. However, Northwood Hills has shown strong performance in the past for its gifted and talented student population, ranking in the top 553 out of 3,184 Texas elementary schools in 2018-2019, indicating that the school may have opportunities to improve outcomes for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote A neighborhood is a group of people who live alongside each other. It is a choice for residents to become a community, allowing connections to develop. Our neighborhood has chosen to come together with Northwood Hills Elementary in the center. Here, the sense of community and family participation is unique and cannot be underestimated. Living in a small neighborhood, with a small school setting, is something very special. Northwood Hills Elementary has a history of state and federal accolades and high achievement awards, a dedicated principal, highly professional, experienced and qualified staff, and a very strong parent participation and PTA involvement. All of this contributes to the success of Northwood Hills Elementary. Our family chose to live in Northwood Hills because of the strong sense of community and the excellent educational opportunities provided. We are delighted with our community's school and I hope you'll give it a good look, too. Northwood Hills Elementary is not only an amazing place to grow and learn, but also a community within our neighborhood that allows our kids to grow up alongside each other.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
