Taft High School

Summary:

Taft High School is a public magnet high school in San Antonio, Texas, serving 2,694 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Northside Independent School District, which is ranked 496 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Taft High School has a diverse student population, with a higher percentage of Hispanic students (66.96%) compared to the state average. The school's academic performance, as measured by STAAR EOC assessments, is generally on par with or slightly below the district and state averages, but it performs particularly well in Biology and U.S. History. Taft High School maintains high four-year graduation rates, ranging from 97.1% to 98.3% over the past five years, which are above the state average. However, the school's performance varies across different student subgroups, with lower rankings for Asian, English Language Learner, and Gifted and Talented students compared to African American and White students.

When compared to nearby high schools within the Northside Independent School District, Taft High School generally performs on par or slightly below the district averages in academic proficiency. Schools like Brandeis High School and Harlan High School consistently outperform Taft High School in STAAR EOC assessments and have higher statewide rankings. The school's declining statewide ranking, growing population of students from lower-income backgrounds, and uneven performance across student subgroups suggest areas for further investigation and potential improvement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
