Thigpen-Zavala Elementary

Summary:

Thigpen-Zavala Elementary is a public elementary school in McAllen, Texas, serving 494 students in grades PK-5. The school stands out within the McAllen Independent School District, which is ranked 323 out of 968 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Thigpen-Zavala has seen a remarkable turnaround in recent years, moving from the bottom 20% of Texas elementary schools in 2020-2021 to the top 15% in 2023-2024. Its SchoolDigger rating has also improved from 1 star to 4 stars over the same period. This dramatic improvement is particularly noteworthy given the school's significantly higher Hispanic student population (96.56%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 86.26% to 96.97% Hispanic students. Thigpen-Zavala's Hispanic, English Language Learner, and Low Socioeconomic Status student groups have consistently outperformed their peers at the district and state levels, ranking in the top 10-15% of Texas schools for these subgroups.

Thigpen-Zavala's strong performance is reflected in its STAAR test scores, which are significantly higher than the district and state averages, particularly in 5th grade where the school outperforms the state by 20-30 percentage points. This success may be attributed to the school's relatively high per-student spending ($12,671 in 2020-2021) and low student-teacher ratio (15.1 in 2022-2023), highlighting the importance of adequate resources and support for student learning. While Thigpen-Zavala outperforms the nearby Seguin Elementary, Romulo D Martinez Elementary, and other schools in the McAllen ISD, the district as a whole struggles to match the state's average performance, suggesting a need for district-wide improvement initiatives.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote They do not care about bullying, claim they do...but, work very hard to discredit the child...They, staff and teacher's are the main bullies. Stop punishing children whose parents can't afford to participate.. This school is located in a very poor neighborhood.... but, there isn't a month that goes by when parents are forced to participate in some stupid endeavor.... They may deny they force participation...but, if you reward one child for participating and exclude the others.... that's a punishment geniuses..... Should dumb people like these be allowed to teach our children?....I hate this school.. Stop trying to sell me things....my friends don't want overpriced," dollar store items"....Do not make claims it's all for the children......teach, that's your job....your only job...last comment. When did this our greatest demonstration of socialism... become capitalism at it's worst... Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
