Centennial Elementary

Summary:

Centennial Elementary is a public elementary school in Lubbock, Texas, serving 618 students in grades PK-5. As part of the Lubbock Independent School District (ISD), which is ranked 545 out of 968 districts in Texas, Centennial Elementary has seen a decline in its statewide ranking over the past several years, dropping from a high of 1,962 out of 4,260 Texas elementary schools in 2013-2014 to its current ranking of 3,987 out of 4,675 in 2023-2024.

Centennial Elementary has a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic (58.58%) and African American (22.49%) students compared to the state average, as well as a lower percentage of White students (14.56%). Academically, the school consistently underperforms the Lubbock ISD and state averages on STAAR assessments in reading, math, and science, with only 36.11% of 3rd graders proficient or better in reading in 2023-2024, compared to 48.07% for Lubbock ISD and 48.85% for Texas. Additionally, Centennial Elementary has a very high percentage of students (83.5%) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

While Centennial Elementary's overall academic performance is low, its African American and Hispanic student subgroups perform relatively better compared to their peers at the district and state levels. However, the school's performance lags significantly behind that of nearby magnet schools like Ramirez Elementary and Wilson Elementary, which consistently rank in the top 10-15% of Texas elementary schools and outperform Centennial on STAAR assessments. Despite spending more per student than the state average, Centennial Elementary's funding and resources are lower than some of the higher-performing nearby schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
