Jim Plain Elementary

Summary:

Jim Plain Elementary is a public elementary school in Leander, Texas, serving 811 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Leander Independent School District. The school's student population has become more racially diverse in recent years, with a higher percentage of Asian and African American students compared to nearby schools like Patricia Knowles Elementary and Tarvin Elementary.

While Jim Plain Elementary's overall academic performance on STAAR tests lags behind district and state averages, particularly in the lower grade levels, the school's 5th-grade reading and math scores are closer to or above the averages. Additionally, the school's performance for specific student subgroups, such as Asian, African American, and English Language Learner students, is generally stronger compared to the overall student population. This suggests that the school is effectively serving its diverse student body.

Despite having a relatively low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, Jim Plain Elementary's academic performance is not as strong as some nearby schools with higher percentages of economically disadvantaged students. This indicates that factors beyond socioeconomic status, such as teaching quality, curriculum, and school leadership, may be more influential in driving student achievement at the elementary level. The school's fluctuating statewide ranking and SchoolDigger rating over the years also suggest that its performance may be variable or inconsistent, warranting further investigation into the underlying causes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is definitely unorganized, PTA is a joke and their events have zero volunteers. My son's teacher didn't even send an introductory phone call or email when he started school. Knew nothing about water bottle, snack schedule, work loads or about the teacher in general until we attended open house (2 weeks after school started). Teachers will take days to email parents back, students never do projects or fun activities, its all copied worksheets. When teachers are out instead of getting sub's the school splits the class up and gives them to other teachers. Yes, they go into another classroom and sit in the back. Horrible horrible school. My son is "excelling" when he was struggling at his last school. He is now one of the top ones in his class, his teacher gives no homework or communicates on nothing he can work on. School is just a joke Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
