Cypress Elementary

Summary:

Cypress Elementary is a public elementary school in Cedar Park, Texas, serving 528 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Leander Independent School District (ISD), which is ranked 200 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 4-star rating.

Cypress Elementary stands out for its higher percentage of White students (61.17%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 20.92% to 61.25%. The school generally performs better than the state average on STAAR tests, particularly in reading, with 67.35% of 5th-grade students proficient or better in 2023-2024, compared to the state average of 53.96%. However, the school's performance in mathematics is more mixed, with some grades performing above the state average and others below. Cypress Elementary's performance varies across different student subgroups, ranking highly for African American and Special Education students but lower for Asian, Gifted and Talented, and Low Socioeconomic Status students.

While Cypress Elementary's performance is generally stronger than nearby schools in the Leander ISD, such as Deer Creek Elementary and Pauline Naumann Elementary, it lags behind the top-performing schools in the Round Rock ISD, such as Canyon Creek Elementary and Spicewood Elementary. Additionally, the increasing percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at Cypress Elementary, from 12.87% in 2020-2021 to 20.83% in 2022-2023, suggests a growing need for additional support and resources for economically disadvantaged students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Just very concern about the comments left by previous reviewer, whose rant has nothing to do with the program of Cypress, but instead on perceived procedural issues within the school district. Cypress is a fantastic school and many great teachers and administrators do not deserve such inane review. My son attends this fabulous school and we could not be happier. Close Quote

Open Quote Beware if planning to attend Cypress (or any LISD school) as there has been repeated rezoning of neighborhoods about every two years. My opinion is that the School Board doesn't appear to really care about concerns of parents and neighborhoods regarding the continual churning of attendance zones. I feel they will do what they want based on School Board Committees that run amok each year making rezoning recommendations that are based on both highly speculative attendance forecasts and weak statistical analysis in my opinion. The board has even gone so far as planning to divide wholly zoned neighborhoods into separate pieces to serve their long term "plans". My opinion is that if you can tolerate being in a situation where neighborhoods are herded like mindless cattle, enjoy the thrills of not knowing what school your child will attend year-to-year, and can stomach watching your children cry their hearts out because he/she is losing their friends on a regular basis, then Cypress (and LISD) is the place for you. Otherwise, I would highly recommend prospective families look elsewhere if seeking to relocate or if deciding between Cypress (LISD) and private schooling. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
