Huntsville Elementary

Summary:

Huntsville Elementary is a public elementary school serving 603 students in grades K-4 in the Huntsville Independent School District (ISD) in Huntsville, Texas. The school's student population is racially diverse, with 35.16% White, 19.24% African American, 42.45% Hispanic, and smaller percentages of Asian, Native American, and multiracial students.

While Huntsville Elementary has a Gifted and Talented program that ranked in the top 5% of Texas elementary schools in 2018-2019, the school has consistently underperformed the state average on STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) tests in reading and mathematics for grades 3 and 4. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 38.66% of 3rd-grade students were proficient or better in STAAR Reading, compared to the state average of 48.85%. The school also struggles to support the academic achievement of certain student subgroups, with African American students ranking in the bottom 20% of Texas elementary schools for STAAR performance. Interestingly, the Texas Online Preparatory Elementary, a virtual school within the Huntsville ISD, outperformed Huntsville Elementary on several STAAR measures, particularly in reading.

Huntsville Elementary's low statewide ranking, with a 2-star rating out of 5 from SchoolDigger, is concerning, especially given the school's high percentage of students from low-income families (77.11% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch). However, the school's performance has declined over time, dropping from a ranking of 2655 out of 4320 Texas elementary schools in 2014-2015 to 2933 out of 4675 in 2023-2024. This trend suggests that the school may need to identify and address the factors contributing to this decline, while also learning from the practices of higher-performing schools within the district, such as Scott Johnson Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
