Reagan K-8 Educational Center

Summary:

Reagan K-8 Educational Center is a public elementary and middle school in Houston, Texas, serving 876 students in grades K-8 with a predominantly Hispanic and African American student population.

Despite serving a high-needs student population, with 91-95% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, Reagan K-8 Educational Center consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools on academic performance. The school's scores on STAAR tests are significantly below state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas, particularly for African American, Hispanic, English Language Learner, and low-income students. Reagan K-8 also has relatively high dropout rates compared to the state and district. In contrast, nearby Windsor Village Elementary, a public magnet school, consistently outperforms Reagan K-8 and ranks in the top third of Texas elementary schools.

When compared to other nearby Houston Independent School District schools like Hines-Caldwell, Petersen Elementary, Grissom Elementary, and Montgomery Elementary, Reagan K-8's academic performance is consistently lower across all grade levels and subject areas. Despite the high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, Reagan K-8's per-student spending is only slightly above the district average, suggesting that additional funding and resources may be needed to address the unique challenges faced by the school's student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
