Martinez C Elementary

Summary:

Martinez C Elementary is a public elementary school in Houston, Texas, serving 280 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Houston Independent School District, which is ranked 572 out of 968 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Martinez C Elementary faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools. The school's performance on STAAR assessments is significantly below district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas, particularly in science where 0% of 5th graders were proficient in 2023-2024. The school's low performance extends across all student subgroups, with the school ranking in the bottom quartile or half of Texas elementary schools for female, male, African American, Hispanic, English Language Learner, Special Education, and Low Socioeconomic Status students. With over 98% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, Martinez C Elementary serves a highly economically disadvantaged population.

In comparison, nearby schools such as Crockett Elementary, Ketelsen Elementary, and Travis Elementary generally perform better academically, with higher STAAR proficiency rates and higher statewide rankings. These schools have more diverse student populations and lower percentages of economically disadvantaged students. While Martinez C Elementary has seen an increase in per-student spending and a decrease in student-teacher ratio, the school's consistent low performance suggests the need for targeted interventions and support to address the unique needs of its student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote THIS SCHOOL IS THE WORST ANY CHILD CAN ATTEND. STARTING WITH THE STAFF IN FRONT OFFICE RECEPTIONIST RUDE AS SHE CAN BE NO HELP AT ALL ALWAYS ROLLING HER EYES TO ANYTHING THAT'S BEING ASKED. TO THE POINT WHERE THEY LET SMALL CHILDREN (6 YEAR OLD TO BE EXACT) WALK HOME ALONE AND UNATTENDED CROSS COUPLE BLOCKS WHERE PEOPLE DON'T EVEN RESPECT THE STOP SIGNS THERE. TO WHERE THERE IS NO SECURITY NO SUPERVISION,TO WHERE THEY ARE CONSTANTLY CHARGING US AS THE PARENTS TO PAY FOR ALMOST EVERY LITTLE ACTIVITY THAT THEY DO FOR THIS CHILDREN TO EVEN HAVE A DAY WITH OUT UNIFORM. CHILDREN DON'T REALLY GO ON FIELD TRIPS BUT THEY DO ASK US TO HELP OUT TO DONATE TO SALE AND WHERE'S ALL THAT MONEY? I HAD ENOUGH OF THIS SCHOOL THE STAFF IS JUST INSANE THERE IS NO ORGANIZATION NO RULES NOTHING IS UNDER CONTROL. MY TWO TEENS WENT TO THIS SCHOOL AND IT WAS JUST GREAT BU NOW I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO MOVE MY LITTLE ONE TO A MUCH BETTER 5 STAR RATED SCHOOL. I ADVISE ANY PARENT TRYING TO PUT THEIR CHILD IN THIS "SCHOOL" DONT DO IT JUST RIDICULOUS THERE. I WOULDN'T EVEN GIVE THEM A STAR IF I HAD AN OPTION TO DO SO!!!!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
