C A Tatum Junior Elementary

Summary:

C A Tatum Junior Elementary is a public elementary school in Dallas, Texas, serving 391 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Dallas Independent School District, which is ranked 557 out of 968 districts in the state.

C A Tatum Junior Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools, with its students performing significantly below district and state averages on STAAR assessments, particularly in science. The school's high percentage of economically disadvantaged students (over 95% eligible for free or reduced-price lunch) likely presents significant challenges in providing the necessary academic and social-emotional support. However, the school's relatively high per-student spending and low student-teacher ratio suggest a focus on resource allocation and small class sizes, which could be leveraged to implement more effective teaching and learning practices.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as Pleasant Grove Elementary, San Jacinto Elementary, and John W Runyon Elementary, also serve predominantly minority and economically disadvantaged student populations, and their academic performance is generally similar to or slightly better than C A Tatum Junior Elementary. However, some schools, like Annie Webb Blanton Elementary and Seabourn Elementary, have significantly higher academic performance, suggesting that factors beyond just student demographics may be contributing to the differences in school outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son is a 1st grade student at C. A. Tatum. He also attended kindergarten there. I must say that the first year went really well, but this year not so much. We have encountered quite a few problems & I am not sure if he will return next year. The staff is not so great and at times they seem like they just dont care as much as I feel they should. Parents if you have other options, use them. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
