Hemmenway Elementary

Summary:

Hemmenway Elementary is a public elementary school in Katy, Texas, serving 1,151 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (CFISD), which is ranked 363 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Hemmenway Elementary stands out for its diverse student population, with a significant percentage of Hispanic (61.77%) and African American (26.06%) students, which is higher than nearby schools. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by STAAR test scores, is generally lower than the district and state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in STAAR Reading ranged from 45.39% to 48.59%, compared to the district's 57.1% to 57.62% and the state's 48.85% to 53.96%. Hemmenway Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Texas elementary schools, with a ranking between 2067 and 3051 out of 4,675 schools over the past several years, and has an overall rating of 2 out of 5 stars from SchoolDigger.

The school's high percentage of students (over 80%) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a relatively high level of economic disadvantage among the student population, may be a contributing factor to the lower academic performance. Additionally, the school's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with African American and Hispanic students generally performing better than their White and multi-racial peers, while English Language Learners and students with special needs tend to have lower proficiency rates. To improve the school's performance, the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District and school leadership may need to implement targeted interventions and support systems that address the unique needs of the student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote There are more bad teachers and staff members than there are good.
Some care, as they should when it comes to keeping children safe, but alot more do not care.
The new teachers here are not well educated and do not know how to properly manage and teach a classroom.
My child's time here has not been pleasant.
Bullying is not taken seriously and issues with the teachers are not taken seriously.
My child comes home almost every single day miserable because of this school.
We would rather home school than force my child to continue to attend a place that is not enjoyable nor protects/teaches. Bottom line is this school looks good but at its core it is not about the students/parents needs.
Many parents are having the same problems as I am.
We feel as though they look out for their own people rather than holding their faults accountable.
I highly recommend looking into other schools!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
