Andre Elementary

Summary:

Andre Elementary is a public elementary school located in Cypress, Texas, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 988. The school is part of the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District, which is ranked 363 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Andre Elementary serves a diverse student population, the school's academic performance, as measured by STAAR test scores and statewide rankings, lags behind many of its neighboring schools within the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. The school's STAAR test scores in reading, math, and science are generally lower than the district and state averages, particularly in math and science. For example, in 2023-2024, only 26.71% of 3rd graders at Andre Elementary were proficient or better in STAAR Math, compared to 41.29% for the district and 40.86% for the state. The school's performance has declined over the past few years, with its statewide ranking dropping from 892 out of 4,359 Texas elementary schools in 2017-2018 to 2,911 out of 4,675 in 2023-2024.

The school's high percentage of economically disadvantaged students (over 59% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch) may be a contributing factor to its lower academic performance, as research has shown that socioeconomic status can significantly impact student achievement. Additionally, the school's relatively high student-teacher ratio (16.3 in 2022-2023) may also be a challenge, as smaller class sizes are often associated with better student outcomes. Nearby schools in the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, such as Hemmenway Elementary, Duryea Elementary, and Walker Elementary, generally perform better than Andre Elementary on STAAR tests and have higher statewide rankings.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote If I could give 0 stars, I would.

My children are great students, and they used to enjoy school everyday. However, after locating to this school district and being assigned to Andre Elementary, their love for school has suffered immensely. Extremely rude staff, highly rigid rules and exaggerated stress put on students for tests has stripped my children of their love for academics, and they now dread going to school everyday. "Private Dining" (aka: eating alone) and "Think Path" (aka: walking during recess alone in the hot Texas sun) is overused. Frankly, I would liken this school to a correctional facility. It absolutely breaks my heart.

I would like to add that we have tried to fix the situation(s), however, our pleas fall on deaf ears of the staff of Andre Elementary. If you care about your child's deep love for education and caring staff, I strongly urge you to check out this school several times, and talk with parents who send their children there. There will be much work ahead of me to re-instill the love of learning for my disheartened children. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
