Columbus High School

Summary:

Columbus High School is a public high school serving 505 students in grades 9-12 in Columbus, Texas, which is part of the Columbus Independent School District. The school has a diverse student population and consistently high graduation and low dropout rates, outperforming the nearby Columbus Crossing High School, though it lags behind the higher-performing Weimar High School.

Columbus High School's strengths include its strong performance on STAAR End-of-Course exams, particularly in subjects like English II Reading, U.S. History, and Biology. The school also has impressive results for its Special Education and Gifted and Talented student subgroups. However, the school struggles in Algebra I, where proficiency rates are below the state and district averages. Additionally, over 50% of Columbus High School students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating significant socioeconomic challenges that may contribute to achievement gaps observed for certain subgroups, such as Hispanic, English Language Learner, and At-Risk students.

Despite these challenges, Columbus High School has shown consistent improvement in its statewide ranking over the past several years, rising from the bottom half of Texas high schools to the top half. This suggests the school is making progress in addressing its issues and providing a better educational experience for its diverse student population. Continued focus on addressing achievement gaps and supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds could help Columbus High School further enhance its outcomes and better serve the community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Absolutely horrible school district. Kids pass without doing anything. Teachers are called to task if students fail. No discipline at all. The monkeys run the zoo. If there is a rule, it is not enforced. Parents are a large part of the problem as they refuse to hold their child accountable for anything. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
