Perez Elementary

Summary:

Perez Elementary is an elementary school in Austin, Texas that serves around 450 students in grades PK-6. The school is part of the Austin Independent School District (AISD), which is ranked 554 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. Perez Elementary has a predominantly Hispanic student population, with over 90% of students identifying as Hispanic in recent years.

Academically, Perez Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 10-15% of Texas elementary schools, receiving 0-1 stars out of 5 in recent years. Proficiency rates on STAAR tests are significantly lower than the AISD and Texas state averages across all grade levels and subjects, particularly in mathematics. For example, in 2023-2024, only 36% of 3rd graders were proficient in reading compared to 55.65% for AISD and 48.85% for Texas. The school also has a very high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, with over 90% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, as well as a high percentage of English Language Learners.

While Perez Elementary spends more per student ($13,626 in 2020-2021) compared to the state average, this does not translate to better academic outcomes. Nearby schools within the AISD district, such as Widen Elementary, Houston Elementary, and Pleasant Hill Elementary, also struggle academically but perform better than Perez Elementary. Schools outside the AISD district, like Wayside Real Learning Academy and Idea Bluff Springs Academy, show higher academic proficiency rates compared to Perez Elementary, despite serving similar student populations.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I LOVE Perez Elementary! The administration and teachers work very very hard to challenge the students and get them excited about learning and thinking about their future goals. The school sets up LOTS of family events to help build a sense of community at the school, constantly encouraging parents to get more involved in their children's education and futures. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
