Travis Hts Elementary

Summary:

Travis Hts Elementary is a public elementary school in Austin, Texas, serving around 510 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Austin Independent School District, which is ranked 554 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Travis Hts Elementary has a relatively diverse student population, with 30% White, 41.76% Hispanic, 16.27% Asian, and 5.69% African American students. This diversity is higher compared to some nearby schools like Galindo Elementary and Zilker Elementary. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by STAAR test scores, is generally lower than the district and state averages, especially in mathematics. The school performs better in certain areas, such as 5th-grade reading and science, but shows significant variation in the performance of different student subgroups, with White and special education students performing relatively well, while Hispanic, African American, and English Language Learner students lag behind.

Over the past few years, Travis Hts Elementary has seen a decline in enrollment and a shift in its racial composition, with a decrease in the percentage of Hispanic students and an increase in the percentage of White and Asian students. The school's performance on STAAR tests also varies significantly across grade levels, with 5th-grade students generally outperforming 3rd and 4th-grade students in both reading and mathematics. When compared to nearby schools, Travis Hts Elementary generally performs better than lower-performing schools like Dawson Elementary, but lags behind higher-performing schools like Becker Elementary. The school's high free/reduced lunch rate, which is a proxy for socioeconomic status, may be a contributing factor to the academic challenges faced by Travis Hts Elementary, along with its relatively high student-teacher ratio.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is a nightmare.

We have been trying for three years to get some assistance for our son, who is quite bright but appears to have some attention deficit issues. Administration and teachers have been completely unresponsive. They keep telling us how great he is and that he's doing fine while his grades have gone from straight As to mostly Cs.

He is a delightful, well-behaved child, so no one cares that he's falling behind. As long as he's not a thorn in their side, he can just get lost. We have ended up going over the principal's head to district administration, but have yet to get any result there either.

Words cannot express how worried, angry and frustrated we are at this point. He's about to go to middle school and is sure to continue this down-hill slide without intervention. We can't afford private school so we are seriously considering taking him out of school altogether. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
