Bill Hasse Elementary

Summary:

Bill Hasse Elementary is a public elementary school in Alvin, Texas, serving 648 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Alvin Independent School District. While the school has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, it has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Texas elementary schools and struggles with significantly lower student performance on standardized tests.

Bill Hasse Elementary's student population is 51.85% Hispanic and 39.04% White, which is more diverse than the nearby Mark Twain Elementary and Melba Passmore Elementary. However, the school's 1-star rating is lower than the 2-3 star ratings of its neighbors. On the 2023-2024 STAAR tests, only 31.86% of 3rd graders at Bill Hasse were proficient in reading, compared to 56.48% for the district and 48.85% for the state. The school also has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 70.89% to 76.85% over the past three years.

While Bill Hasse Elementary spends more per student ($10,033 in 2020-2021) than the state average, this has not translated into better student outcomes. The school's performance on STAAR tests has been inconsistent, with some grades and subjects showing improvement while others have declined. Additionally, the school's student subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, and English Language Learner students, consistently rank in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools, indicating significant achievement gaps. Addressing these challenges will require a comprehensive approach involving the school, district, and community stakeholders.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote They had my son call on the phone for forgetting one question on his homework. Now mind you most parents don't expect to get a phone call unless something is wrong with your child. Not only did i receive the call but their phones are all full of static so all i could tell is it was my son and he was in tears. I hurried to the school thinking something was wrong and i get told he forgot to do one thing on his homework and this was their policy to humiliate our children for something stupid and now you have them upset the rest of the day. Well that's a good teaching policy isn't it. So much for teaching our kids patience. This is only the third week of school and the signs are already showing it's not going to be a good year. By the way I let the school know their phones were messed up and that other parents were going to be upset with these calls and they didn't seem to care the line which was clear out the office of children most with looks of terror on their faces continued to move on as they continued to have the children call even after I told them about their phones. They don't care about the children and they don't care about the parents of the children. Not to mention their is no parking for school functions so you either have to jump the curb with your car and park across the rode or if you can get in you might find a parking spot on the grass and then you have to worry about getting blocked in. Thinking of having my child moved to a different school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
