Landis Elementary

Summary:

Landis Elementary is a public elementary school in Houston, Texas, serving 580 students from kindergarten to 4th grade. It is part of the Alief Independent School District, which is ranked 699 out of 968 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Landis Elementary faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools over the past decade. Its performance on state assessments is significantly below the state and district averages, with proficiency rates ranging from 12% to 45% across different grade levels and subjects. The school's struggles are particularly pronounced for certain student subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, English Language Learners, and students from low-income families, all of whom perform in the bottom 10-15% of Texas elementary schools. However, the school's special education students have shown more promising results, ranking in the top 25% of Texas elementary schools.

Interestingly, the nearby schools in the Alief Independent School District, such as Horn Elementary, Chambers Elementary, and Best Elementary, have similar demographic profiles and academic performance to Landis Elementary, with most ranking in the bottom half of Texas elementary schools. In contrast, the nearby KIPP Shine Prep, a public charter school, stands out with significantly higher academic performance, ranking in the top 25% of Texas elementary schools. This suggests that alternative educational models may be more effective in serving the student population in this area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school should be condemned, seriously. The teachers do not teach, they simply sit in ac all day and collect a paycheck. They do not send home graded work so you will only find out if your child is not excelling when progress reports come out, then you have to kick it into over drive to help your child catch up. I had to have a meeting w/ principal jst to get graded work sent home so I could stay on top of my childs progress and still had to continue to call and send written request for teacher to cooperate. Upon receiving graded work I found several papers graded incorrectly, causing my child to fail those assignments. When that was brought to teachers attention, she was unapologetic. The students are constantly fighting, there is no supervision. Faculty talks in a very demeaning manner to the children and will attempt to speak to parents the same way. In my opinion the principal's loyalty is to his staff not the students and that is sad because they are the ones suffering. WORST school EVER! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
