Cypresswood Elementary

Summary:

Cypresswood Elementary is a public elementary school in Humble, Texas, serving 767 students in grades 1-5. The school is part of the Aldine Independent School District, which is ranked 790 out of 968 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Cypresswood Elementary has a diverse student population, with a higher percentage of Hispanic (51.63%) and African American (38.2%) students compared to the state average. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by STAAR test scores, is generally below the state and district averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in STAAR Reading ranged from 23.38% (4th grade) to 39.87% (5th grade), compared to the state averages of 50.66% and 53.96%, respectively. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with its African American students ranking 1,389 out of 2,443 Texas elementary schools, while its Hispanic students ranked 3,478 out of 4,401 schools.

Cypresswood Elementary's challenges are further compounded by its high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 87.61% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year. While the school's spending per student has increased over the years, from $7,716 in 2018-2019 to $9,753 in 2020-2021, its performance is generally lower than that of nearby schools within the Aldine Independent School District, such as Ogden Elementary and Jones Elementary, which have higher STAAR test scores and better overall rankings.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son attended Cypresswood Elementary the first year they opened as a 1st grader. I was beyond pleased with the school principal, staff and his teacher. Ms. Gates is by far one of the most down to earth and loving teachers he has had. She communicates very well with her parents and always responds in a timely manner. I joined the PTA to get closer with the staff and involved with the school since it was their 1st year opened and it was a great experience. The school isn't perfect. They were still figuring out the minor details of car rider lines and pick ups at the beginning of the year but by the end, it was all running smoothly. For the 2015-2016 they were the top ranked school in ALDINE ISD for parent volunteers. They love their parents and their parents love them. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
