Cedars International Academy

Summary:

Cedars International Academy is a public charter elementary school serving 382 students in grades PK-8 in Austin, Texas. While the school has a significantly higher Hispanic student population compared to nearby schools, its academic performance is generally lower than state and district averages, particularly in mathematics.

Cedars International Academy's test scores are below the state and district averages across various grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's 3rd grade reading proficiency rate was 21.05% compared to the state average of 48.85%. The school's performance is particularly low in mathematics, with only 5.71% of 4th graders and 18.52% of 7th graders meeting proficiency standards. The school's African American students perform relatively well, ranking in the top 25% of Hart Elementary and Barrington Elementary in 2018-2019 and 2017-2018, but its Hispanic, English Language Learner, and Special Education students perform poorly, ranking in the bottom 25% of Texas elementary schools.

Cedars International Academy's high percentage of students (80.89% in 2022-2023) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population, may be a contributing factor to its lower academic performance. The school's spending per student, at approximately $10,000, is lower than the spending at some of the nearby public schools, such as Pickle Elementary ($13,095 per student) and Wooten Elementary ($13,512 per student). Addressing these challenges and improving instructional practices, providing targeted interventions, and addressing the unique needs of its diverse student population could be crucial for improving the educational outcomes at Cedars International Academy.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Cedars is a diamond in the rough! My child is doing so well there.
Things we love about Cedars: small class sizes, strong social emotional learning, hands on learning, all children regardless of economic status receive free breakfast and lunch, top-notch art, music, and Spanish classes, a vegetable garden, fruit trees, and a butterfly garden.
The kindergarten program is particularly amazing. The children travel around the world learning geography in context. All students are in school houses (like in Harry Potter). It helps all students feels connected. Cedars feels like a family where everyone is someone. It’s like a private school, but free. 5 stars from our family. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.

Impact of COVID-19 on Cedars International Academy

The coronavirus has had a profound impact on education in America. Learning shifted online overnight, attendance numbers dwindled, and enrollment decreased.
