Howard Elementary

Summary:

Howard Elementary is a public elementary school in Gallatin, Tennessee, serving 554 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Sumner County School District, which is ranked 28 out of 139 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating.

One of the key differentiating factors of Howard Elementary is its diverse student population, with a higher percentage of African American (13.36%) and Hispanic (16.97%) students compared to many nearby schools, such as Beech Elementary (84.78% white) and Union Elementary (82.64% white). Despite this diversity, Howard Elementary has shown steady improvement in its statewide ranking, moving from 438 out of 983 Tennessee elementary schools in 2020-2021 to 245 out of 1008 in 2023-2024, with a 4-star rating. The school's performance on TNReady assessments is also noteworthy, with higher proficiency rates in Mathematics and Science compared to the state average, and improving English Language Arts scores over the past few years.

While Howard Elementary has a more diverse student population, several nearby schools, such as Beech Elementary, Liberty Creek Elementary, and Union Elementary, have significantly higher academic performance, with proficiency rates well above the state and district averages. This suggests that factors beyond racial diversity may be contributing to the academic success of these higher-performing schools. Additionally, Howard Elementary has a higher percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, which may contribute to its academic challenges compared to its neighbors, despite having funding levels on par with or higher than many of the nearby schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son is in Kindergarten and this school is the worst I have ever seen, protocol for ADHD is getting tested for a IEP, not my son he got a 504 with nothing on it. He is isolated in class and had no friends, he has to sit with a disabled child who can't even talk. They never let him have lunch with the other children, the Principal, nurse, and guidance counselor are the most rude school staff I ever met. My son is already behind, he doesn't know how to write his letters still. This mother is not happy, may not let him return after winter break. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
