Joe Shafer Middle School

Summary:

Joe Shafer Middle School is a public middle school in Gallatin, Tennessee, serving 666 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Sumner County School District, which is ranked 28th out of 139 districts in Tennessee and has a 4-star rating.

While Joe Shafer Middle School has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, its academic performance, as measured by state test scores, is generally lower than the Sumner County and Tennessee state averages across all subject areas and grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's proficiency rates were 35.4% in Mathematics, 24.2% in English Language Arts, 37.3% in Science, and 31.2% in Social Studies, compared to Sumner County's 58%, 48.1%, 55.9%, and 59.2% respectively. The school's statewide ranking has also declined over the years, from a high of 129th out of 574 Tennessee middle schools in 2018-2019 to 337th out of 580 in the 2023-2024 school year, with a 2-star rating.

Notably, Joe Shafer Middle School's performance is particularly low for certain student subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, Special Education, and Low Socioeconomic Status students, who rank in the bottom third or bottom quarter of Tennessee middle schools in these categories. This suggests potential equity issues that need to be addressed. Additionally, the school's academic outcomes do not seem to be commensurate with its relatively high per-student spending, indicating a need to examine how resources are being utilized and allocated.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote When my son started here in the 6th grade, he was in advanced classes--mostly A's some B's. His grades slipped from year to year, with teachers not teaching him. With lower grades, in 8th grade he was put in regular classes and that is when the bullying amplified.

The principal is unfair and inconsistent with discipline--though he proudly claims otherwise! My son was assaulted and no one knew about it. No adults in the halls. Only when he reported it, did they see it on tape. No one was watching the video in real time. When it was shown that my son defended himself (defined as appropriate in the student handbook), the principal punishes my son by sending him to ISS for protecting himself. The assailant was carried off in handcuffs.

In hindsight, I wish I had pulled my child from this hole. Any communication I had with the leaders here fell on deaf ears. They destroyed his spirit, and I really blame the principal--he had a major role in it. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
