Hermitage Elementary

Summary:

Hermitage Elementary is a public elementary school in Hermitage, Tennessee, serving 328 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Davidson County school district, which is ranked 122 out of 139 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Hermitage Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom half of Tennessee elementary schools, with academic performance, as measured by TNReady test scores, significantly below state and county averages across all subjects and grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, only 18% of Hermitage Elementary students were proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to 39.7% statewide and 29.5% in Davidson County. The school's performance is particularly low for certain student subgroups, such as Hispanic students and students with low socioeconomic status. However, Hermitage Elementary has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 38.41% White, 22.26% African American, and 32.32% Hispanic, which is higher than many nearby schools.

While Hermitage Elementary has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 12 to 15.6 students per teacher, its academic performance is significantly lower than nearby schools, such as Stanford Elementary, which consistently ranks in the top 15% of Tennessee elementary schools and has much higher test scores. The declining academic performance at Hermitage Elementary, coupled with the high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds and the large population of English Language Learners, suggest that the school may need to implement targeted interventions and strategies to address the needs of its diverse student population and improve educational outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter was a year behind in 1st grade. Why did they take so long to tell me? She was held back. My son has autism. I didn’t know what autism was at the time. They told me he might have autism. Why didn’t they test him to see if he had it. I could have gotten him in ABA therapy sooner. I know a lot of good teachers have left because of the principal. It used to be a good school. Not anymore. Close Quote

Open Quote This used to be a wonderful school. However since the change in administration it is very clear things are going down hill quickly. Even the PTA president stepped down. The teachers are miserable, and that ultimately is affecting my kids. The school has a very high special needs population who are violent, yet they remain at the school putting other kids in danger. I love all the teachers there, but the principal needs to go. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
