Haywood Elementary

Summary:

Haywood Elementary is a public elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee, serving 575 students in grades PK-4. The school is part of the Davidson County school district, which is ranked 122 out of 139 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Haywood Elementary stands out for its significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (69.74%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 26.58% to 77.47% Hispanic. The school also has a lower percentage of White students (8.7%) than the surrounding schools, which range from 11.66% to 51.42% White. Academically, Haywood Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of Tennessee elementary schools, with low proficiency rates on state assessments, particularly in mathematics where only 13.1% of students were proficient or better, compared to 29.5% in Davidson County and 39.7% statewide.

While Haywood Elementary spends a relatively high amount per student ($14,191 in 2020-2021), this does not appear to be translating into improved academic outcomes. The school's performance is significantly lower than nearby schools like Glengarry Elementary, Crieve Hall Elementary, and Tusculum Elementary, which have higher academic proficiency and statewide rankings despite serving similar student populations. This suggests that factors beyond just student demographics, such as school leadership, teaching quality, and resource allocation, may be contributing to the academic struggles at Haywood Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The principal is very vindictive and does not treat staff adequately. Over the past 3 years, nearly 28 teachers have either retired, moved schools, or quit teaching entirely. The high turnover of teachers does not help create a healthy student environment. Teachers fear their administrators, and do not have a voice. There is no sense of trust between admin and the teachers. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
