Oakland Elementary has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 51.45% White, 20.26% African American, and 15.98% Hispanic. The school has shown strong academic performance, particularly in science, where it has consistently outperformed the Montgomery County and Tennessee state averages. Oakland also ranks in the top 150-160 schools in Tennessee for African American and Hispanic student performance, indicating it is effectively serving these populations. However, the school's statewide ranking has declined over the years, from 109th out of 997 Tennessee elementary schools in 2017-2018 to 401st out of 1,008 in 2023-2024, suggesting it may be facing challenges that are impacting its relative performance.

However, some schools, such as Rossview Elementary, significantly outperform Oakland across multiple subject areas and grade levels. Additionally, Oakland Elementary has struggled with its ranking for students of low socioeconomic status, consistently ranking in the bottom third of Tennessee elementary schools in this category, indicating the school may need to focus additional resources and support on this student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote i went there from 2nd grade to 5th when it was first built. the teachers were amazing. The special area teachers are fun, and they have extra people to help the special needs kids. The playground got new things last year which hopefully no one has fallen off if it.. I wasnt able to really use the new things since i didnt attend there anymore but i know the other things were fun to play on. If you cant play outside your teacher would have things for you to play with inside. The school would do fundraisers too, some we could do activities in. I dont know if the teachers i had still teach at oakland, but i do know mrs. mccoin still does. Im unsure about what else to put, but it is an overall good school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
