North Side High School

Summary:

North Side High School is a public high school in Jackson, Tennessee, serving 886 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Madison County school district, which is ranked 128 out of 139 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

North Side High School faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom third of Tennessee high schools. The school's performance on state assessments is significantly below the state and county averages, with proficiency rates often less than half the state average, particularly for its African American, Hispanic, and low-income student subgroups. North Side High School's special education students also perform very poorly, ranking 158 out of 159 Tennessee high schools in 2017-2018. The school's high student-teacher ratio and lower spending per student compared to the state average may contribute to these struggles.

In comparison, nearby schools like South Side High School and Jackson Central-Merry Early College High have significantly higher academic performance, suggesting that the challenges faced by North Side High School are not solely due to district-level factors. The large achievement gaps between the school's racial subgroups and the declining statewide ranking over the past decade indicate that targeted interventions and resource allocation may be necessary to improve educational opportunities and outcomes for North Side High School's students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote While things are getting better, they are getting better very slowly. With this "Vision 2016" it will be interesting to see how the new lines and new students affect Northside. I have had difficulty communicating with teachers - mainly that I get no response when I email or call. Also, my child was taken on a field trip without permission (I wrote NO on the permission slip that was sent home, they put my child on the bus anyway) and got nowhere when I complained. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
