Lincoln Elementary School

Summary:

Lincoln Elementary School is a public elementary school in Jackson, Tennessee, serving 389 students in grades PK-5. The school has a predominantly African American student body, with 87.4% of students identifying as African American. Unfortunately, Lincoln Elementary has consistently ranked among the lowest-performing elementary schools in Tennessee, with a statewide ranking between 743 and 1002 out of around 1,000 schools over the past decade.

Lincoln Elementary School significantly underperforms compared to the state and Madison County averages on standardized tests. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 6.7% of students were proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to 39.7% statewide and 25.2% in the district. Similarly, only 12.8% of students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 37.6% statewide and 25.7% in the district. The school's performance is particularly low for African American students and students of low socioeconomic status. Despite spending more per student ($12,083 in 2020-2021) than nearby schools, Lincoln Elementary has not been able to translate this into better academic outcomes.

The nearby schools, such as Thelma Barker Elementary, Pope School, and Community Montessori School, generally outperform Lincoln Elementary School on academic measures, despite being part of the same Madison County district. This suggests that the challenges faced by Lincoln Elementary may be related to the high percentage of African American students and students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as the school's location within a low-performing district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
