Chattanooga Charter School of Excellence

Summary:

Chattanooga Charter School of Excellence is an elementary school serving 390 students in grades K-5 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which is part of the Hamilton County school district.

Despite spending significantly more per student ($13,235) than nearby traditional public schools like East Ridge Elementary ($10,416) and Clifton Hills Elementary ($13,611), Chattanooga Charter School of Excellence consistently ranks among the lowest-performing elementary schools in Tennessee, with proficiency rates in math, English language arts, and science that are significantly lower than district and state averages across all grade levels. The school's African American and Hispanic student subgroups perform particularly poorly, ranking in the bottom 20-40% of their respective subgroups statewide.

While the school has a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 13.6, comparable to nearby schools, its persistent low performance raises concerns about the effectiveness of its educational model. Nearby traditional public schools like Orchard Knob Elementary, Battle Academy For Teaching Learning, and Clifton Hills Elementary generally outperform Chattanooga Charter School of Excellence in academic proficiency, despite serving similar student populations and having comparable funding levels.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school has the makings of a Stephen King film. You go in on your first day, set up a classroom with all the hope in the world and for a while things are great. Administration (especially the "head of schools") seems to be supportive and friendly, but this only lasts for a while. Things began changing for me about a month into the school year. I noticed little things at first like how he would tell us that "teaching isn't a 9 to 5 job" or that people who were leaving (in groups, by the way) weren't doing their jobs. I was concerned because I take teaching very seriously and I know that many of the teachers who were leaving did also. I did a bit of research about this "head of schools" and realized that I had made a terrible mistake coming to this school. But I was here and determined to make it through the year. This did not happen. I was sure by the three month mark that I was going to have a nervous breakdown. Administration will pull you from your classroom in the middle of class for secret meetings and leave the receptionist in your room as the sub. They will call last minute meetings and reprimand you if you can't stay. This is really tough for those with little ones because they expect you to stay sometimes until 7 pm. This isn't possible for those of us who have to pick up children in daycare. Add to this the fact that testing is their main objective and you have a terrible environment. I have personally witnessed many teachers leave this school during the current school year, and it all began by the end of August. This place is not a healthy environment for teachers or students. Please do not apply for this place. They will hire you on the spot because they are desperate. Trust me and keep looking. I am still trying to overcome the effects of the stress related issues that I suffered and I wasn't there for very long. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
