Clear Dot Charter School

Summary:

Clear Dot Charter School is an alternative public charter school in Columbia, South Carolina, serving 338 students in grades PK-10 as part of the Charter Institute at Erskine district, which is ranked 34 out of 75 districts in the state.

Clear Dot Charter School stands out for its significantly higher percentage of African American students (69.53%) compared to nearby schools and the state average, as well as its extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 90.82% to 94.97% over the past three years. However, the school consistently underperforms the Charter Institute at Erskine district and the state averages on standardized tests, with proficiency rates often less than half of the district and state levels. Despite a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 13.1 to 18.1, Clear Dot Charter School's academic challenges suggest the need for a deeper examination of its instructional practices and support systems.

Interestingly, the nearby School Connections Academy and South Carolina Virtual Charter School, which serve more diverse student populations, generally outperform Clear Dot Charter School on academic measures. This raises questions about equity and access to educational opportunities for the predominantly low-income, African American students at Clear Dot Charter School, who face significant socioeconomic challenges that may contribute to the school's academic struggles.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote the school is not parent friendly! You hardly here from teachers unless you contact them. Only current parents are allowed in the school! Most of the employees are family in someway or another. The school is and high school is very unorganized or supervised ! They seem to care more about sports then the other students that don’t play sports. You would think being a smaller school they could watch the kids better but the kids seem to take this school to play with! The parents at this school also let there kids get away with everything, phones, talking back, and cursing and running in and out of classes. And when the coaches attempt to discipline they have been jumped on physically by parents! I wouldn’t recommend this school, it has a good idea but not the people running it, more about money the kids ! Close Quote

Open Quote This is a very unprofessional school, most of the employees are family in someway or another. Only certain parents are allowed to go in the school, middle school and high school students are allowed to have there phones during school. Students are poorly supervised.. Reports by students of students engaging in unsupervised activities in class! Extra school funds are put on to sports . This is more for show and hen caring about the students! This school starts our promising a lot then at the end nothing!!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
