McCormick Elementary has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (69.62%) compared to the state average, and consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of elementary schools in South Carolina, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics that are significantly lower than the state and district averages. For example, in 2023-2024, only 30.8% of 3rd graders, 25.3% of 4th graders, and 32.6% of 5th graders were proficient in ELA, compared to the state averages of 53.8%, 57.2%, and 55.7%, respectively. When comparing McCormick Elementary to other nearby schools, such as Creek Bridge STEM Academy, which is also in the Marion 10 district, it becomes clear that McCormick Elementary is an outlier in terms of academic performance. This suggests that the challenges faced by McCormick Elementary may be unique to the school or the community it serves, and that targeted interventions and support are needed to address the significant academic and socioeconomic challenges facing the school and its community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I taught at MES for one year and it was the most absolutely terrible experience. I had no support from administration and the students basically ran the school. Students were not able to talk AT ALL during lunch, which was supposed to be one time they were actually able to socialize. Recess was only 15 minutes, which was a terrible decision by administration. It was almost like teaching in a jail. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
