Newington Elementary

Summary:

Newington Elementary is a public elementary school in Summerville, South Carolina, serving 758 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Dorchester 02 School District, which is ranked 17th out of 75 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating.

Newington Elementary has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with higher percentages of African American (23.75%), Hispanic (10.03%), and students identifying as two or more races (11.21%). However, the school's academic performance, as measured by proficiency rates in ELA, Math, and Science, is generally lower than the district and state averages. For example, Newington's 3rd-grade proficiency rates in 2023-2024 were 56.3% in ELA and 46.4% in Math, compared to the district's 61.5% and 59.3%, respectively, and the state's 53.8% and 54.5%. The school's statewide ranking has also declined over the years, from 118th out of 619 South Carolina elementary schools in 2015-2016 to 323rd out of 638 in 2023-2024.

Newington Elementary faces several challenges, including a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds (81.27% receive free or reduced-price lunch) and significant performance gaps among student subgroups. The school is located just 0.12 miles away from Flowertown Elementary, which outperforms Newington on academic assessments. Despite increased per-student spending at Newington, from $9,786 in 2019-2020 to $12,264 in 2022-2023, the school's academic outcomes have not significantly improved. To address these issues, the school and district may need to implement targeted interventions and strategies to support the academic growth of all students, particularly those from underperforming subgroups.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I was a former student of Newington Elementary School when it was a brand new school around 1978 or 1979. At that time, when the school building was under construction, many of us attended Rollins Elementary or Knightsville Elementary before we could transfer to the new school at Newington. I must say that after all of these years, I still hold Newington Elementary School dearly in my heart! Newington had the warmest and caring faculty during my elementary years there. They were strict, but fair...which is a good lesson, especially with the challenges that students are facing with today. The faculty of Newington Elementary had prepared us so well academically, that my transition to the 7th grade at Alston-Summerville Middle School, was a success! I can remember most of my teachers at Newington: Ms. Dingle (my crush..lol!!), Ms. Winston (math), Ms. Salvo, Mr. Clay (he looked like Santa Claus), Kevin "Mr. Mack" McKevlin (die-hard Clemson fan and alumnus), Mr. Hartnett (music), Ms. Nancy C. and Nancy P. Smith...and the list goes on!! They all made a HUGE impact in my young life. I remember the field trips to Charlestown Landing, Hot Wheels Skating Rink, Magnolia Gardens, and having a picnic at the historic Charleston Battery.

I currently live in Florida and I have relatives that live in Charleston. During my last visit to Charleston, I drove to Summerville with my young daughters, and I wanted them to see Newington Elementary School. The first thing my oldest daughter said, "Dad, why are there so many curves on the road to get to your old school?" I just laughed, because I remember I used to ride my bike to school everyday on those curves! When we got there, the community and the landscaping of the school was AWESOME! I told my girls that if I ever get a transfer from work to move to Charleston, I will definitely enroll them into Newington Elementary so they can experience a great school like I did as a student.

So Parents..Newington is STILL an excellent school in the past and today for more than 33 years! My advice to you all is to PLEASE get involved with your children with their homework, activities, PTA, etc..and help support the faculty and staff in whatever they need for your child to succeed, because I was one of those children back in 1979-1982, and it really impacted my life greatly!

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
