Carolina Elementary

Summary:

Carolina Elementary is a public elementary school located in Hartsville, South Carolina, serving grades 1-5 with a student population of 228. The school is part of the Darlington 01 school district, which is ranked 41 out of 75 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Carolina Elementary consistently outperforms the Darlington 01 district and the state of South Carolina in standardized test scores, particularly in 5th-grade English Language Arts and Mathematics. For example, in 2023-2024, 73.8% of 5th-grade students at Carolina Elementary were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 49.7% in the district and 55.7% statewide. However, the school's ranking has declined in recent years, dropping to 228th out of 638 schools in 2023-2024, despite maintaining strong test scores. This suggests that other schools in the state may be improving at a faster rate. Additionally, the high percentage of students from low socioeconomic status (SES) backgrounds (100% free/reduced lunch) at Carolina Elementary appears to be a significant factor in the school's overall performance, as this subgroup lags behind their peers statewide.

While Carolina Elementary outperforms the Darlington 01 district and the state on many metrics, some nearby schools, such as North Hartsville Elementary and Lamar-Spaulding Elementary, also demonstrate strong academic performance, particularly in specific grade levels or subject areas. This suggests that there may be opportunities for Carolina Elementary to learn from the effective teaching practices or programs in place at these neighboring schools to further improve outcomes for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
