Reservoir Avenue School

Summary:

Reservoir Avenue School is an elementary school in Providence, Rhode Island, serving 267 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school faces significant academic challenges, with consistently lower test scores compared to state and district averages, as well as nearby schools.

Reservoir Avenue School has underperformed on the RICAS (Rhode Island Comprehensive Assessment System) tests, with only 28.9% of 3rd-grade students proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 15.3% in the Providence district and 37.8% statewide. In Mathematics, 33.1% of Reservoir Avenue 3rd-graders were proficient or better, compared to 14.7% in the district and 39.1% statewide. The school's performance has declined over the years, and it is now rated 1 star out of 5 by SchoolDigger. In comparison, the nearby Leviton Dual Language School had 40.9% of 3rd-graders proficient or better in ELA and 40% in Mathematics.

Reservoir Avenue School serves a high-needs population, with 80-81.65% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch over the past three years. While the school has seen an increase in spending per student, from $12,663 in 2017-2018 to $15,998 in 2020-2021, this has not yet translated into improved academic outcomes. The school's student-teacher ratio has fluctuated, ranging from 13.6 to 17.1, which may impact the level of individual attention and support students receive. To address these challenges, the school and district may need to implement targeted interventions and closely monitor the school's progress to support the success of Reservoir Avenue School and its students.

Open Quote Great teachers and caring, nurturing office staff. Building is old, but that's typical for Providence. My son is thriving here. Only complaint is that there are no open houses or other school-wide events to involve parents and create a stronger community. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
