The school has seen fluctuations in its statewide ranking over the past decade, ranging from a high of 111 out of 537 Pennsylvania high schools in 2020-2021 to a low of 443 out of 686 in the current 2023-2024 school year, with an overall SchoolDigger rating that has varied between 2 and 4 stars out of 5.

Williamsport Area Senior High School maintains a relatively strong 4-year graduation rate, ranging from 83.7% to 87.5% over the past few years, and a low dropout rate of 1.6% to 2.6%. However, the school's academic performance on Keystone Exams is somewhat uneven, with strengths in Algebra I (45.2% proficiency compared to the state's 41.6%) but weaknesses in Biology (31.2% proficiency compared to the state's 50.5%) and Literature (58.9% proficiency compared to the state's 63.2%). The school's high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds (63.69% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch) may be a contributing factor to its academic performance, and addressing achievement gaps across different student subgroups could be an area of focus.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote AWFULL the teachers had made me cry before and other students too. Some of the students with disabilities should be with kids like them so they feel comfortable but some of the kids with autism are mixed in class rooms with students that dont have disabilities, so some of them get bullied i even say kids with Down syndrome get made fun of. Not also that but theres no classes for the in between like if you’re smarter than the regular kids but not that smart as the regular kids then theres no class for that. they treat kids in honor classes differently, some of the kids that are popular and smart will be favored, and its very stressful in the honor classes they overload you with work. And it you’re hardworking average kid who gets stuck in the regular classes then you get treated bad TOO like its very obnoxious and loud there with many bad kids who wont stop talking on top of that, one of the disabled kids have wet themselves and even (sht) themselves but no one said . Lastly there are only THREE languages you can take , that is spanish , German, and latin which you can’t really speak anyways! I will not be staying at this school anymore Close Quote

Open Quote Very impressed with the improvements and changes being made at the high school. Test scores are rising, students appear to be learning more and there appears to be a significant decline in disciplinary issues.

I love the preview of the upcoming Pathway Program and am happy to see the forward thinking.

I am pleased that we have chosen Williamsport High School for our children. Close Quote

Open Quote This school gets a whole lot of crap because people are afraid, prejudice, and they don't take the time to learn about it. Sure, there's a lot of fights, poverty, and other problems. What school doesn't have their own problems? However, I've gone to 7 different schools, and Williamsport was the school where i grew the most as a person. If your a wise kid who knows what not to get involved with, you can have a great time there. Their music program is unparalleled, and they have a slew of opportunities there because of their size. It's harder to shine at a big school like Port, but those who shine their are the brightest around. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
