Webster School

Summary:

Webster School is an elementary school in Philadelphia, PA that serves 515 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Philadelphia City School District, which is ranked 494 out of 606 districts in Pennsylvania and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Webster School has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 10.29% White, 32.04% African American, 53.2% Hispanic, and other minority groups.

Webster School consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of Pennsylvania elementary schools, with very low academic performance on standardized tests. In 2022-2023, only 14% of Webster students were proficient or better in Math, compared to 39.3% statewide and 20.4% in the Philadelphia district. The school's performance is particularly low for its African American, Hispanic, low-socioeconomic, and disabled student subgroups. Webster School has an extremely high percentage (100%) of students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage. Despite increased per-student spending over the past several years, the academic outcomes have not improved significantly.

The nearby schools in the Philadelphia City School District, such as Gloria Casarez Elementary, Willard Frances E, and Elkin Lewis, have similar demographic profiles and academic performance to Webster School. These schools also rank in the bottom 10-15% of Pennsylvania elementary schools and struggle with low proficiency rates on standardized tests. The persistent underperformance at Webster School and its neighboring schools suggests that there may be systemic challenges within the Philadelphia City School District that are impacting student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My granchildren attend Webster I liked the idea cause it was close by but a person doesn't realize how good a school is until u move out the neighborhood they had it made the teachers for both my grandchildren were great if there was a problem it was taken care once the complain was given. To see and meet the principal was a good opportunity for all da students, parents and other family member she knows them all by face and name that's kool. She and her teachers accept these morning, afternoon and 3pm hugs. The whole school was getting involved wit teachers parents and students and all this looking around made it safe for us all thanks to da principal Mrs. Conner's, her secretary's are very good with the students and parents the teachers really lokin out for everyone. Since Mrs. Conners came to Webster til my Granchildren left because I moved to NY I remember and recommend Webster to my friends in Philadelphia. Well I send my regards to Mrs. Conners the Secretary's and Teachers I miss dem dearly. Hope Webster keeps bein blessed wit a principal like Ms. Conners and her Whole Staff. THANK YOU.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
