Summary:

Markham Elementary School is a public K-5 school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, serving around 300 students and part of the highly-ranked Mt. Lebanon School District. Markham consistently ranks among the top 1% of Pennsylvania elementary schools, with exceptional academic performance that far exceeds state and district averages.

Markham Elementary students excel on standardized tests, with 88.8% scoring proficient or better in Math and 82.6% in English Language Arts, compared to 71.6% and 83.2% in the district, and just 39.3% and 53.8% statewide. The school also boasts a 96.4% proficiency rate in science. However, Markham has a significantly higher percentage of white students (88.67%) compared to nearby schools like Myrtle Ave School and Dormont Elementary, which have more diverse student populations and lower academic performance.

Markham's student population also comes from relatively affluent families, with only 6.67% receiving free or reduced-price lunch, in contrast to the higher percentages at surrounding schools. Additionally, Markham spends significantly more per student ($16,587 in 2021-2022) than the state average, which likely contributes to its exceptional resources and educational outcomes. These factors highlight the complex relationship between demographics, funding, and academic success, underscoring the need for equitable access to high-quality education for all students, regardless of their background.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Very frustrated with the treatment towards my son. Within one morning he was sent to the nurse’s office 4 times because of his allergies. I was told that it was a distraction. When I spoke to his principal about it, his response was that the coughing was distracting other children. He is in second grade and really, coughing is now not acceptable in class? Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
