Lafayette Elementary School

Summary:

Lafayette Elementary School is a public elementary school in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, serving 427 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Lancaster School District, which is ranked 506 out of 606 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite the school's high per-student spending of $21,774, Lafayette Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 20% of Pennsylvania elementary schools, with significantly below-average PSSA test scores in both math and English language arts. The school's student population is predominantly Hispanic (60.89%) and low-income, with 100% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Nearby Ross Elementary, Martin School, and Smith-Wade-Elementary Elementary School generally perform better academically, despite serving similar student populations, suggesting that factors beyond just student demographics may be contributing to Lafayette's poor performance.

The persistent achievement gaps faced by the school's Hispanic and low-income student populations highlight the need for targeted interventions and support to address the unique challenges and barriers these students face. While increased funding alone may not be the sole solution, addressing the root causes of the school's underperformance, such as instructional quality, school leadership, and equitable educational opportunities, will be crucial in order to improve outcomes for the students of Lafayette Elementary School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote In the past few weeks, I have been in and out of Lafayette Elementary as an aide. If there's on thing I've noticed, it's that the teachers don't seem to hold much hope for the students. Instead, teachers go through the motions of a day-to-day classroom, shuffling them along to the next teacher, always adhering to what the PSSAs may or may not have on them.
I have hope for the students of Lafayette, and I wish the teachers would, too. Give the students a chance to show you how bright they are, instead of constantly putting them down. Let them flourish and grow, and be creative. These kids have it in them, but they won't get it from the Lafayette staff. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
