East Fallowfield Elementary School

Summary:

East Fallowfield Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 320 students in grades K-5 in the Coatesville Area School District in East Fallowfield Township, Pennsylvania. The school has a diverse student population, with 33.12% White, 35.94% African American, 22.5% Hispanic, 0.62% Asian, and 7.81% two or more races.

Despite its diverse student body, East Fallowfield Elementary School consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Pennsylvania elementary schools, ranking 1305 out of 1534 schools in the 2022-2023 school year. The school's performance on PSSA tests is significantly below the state and district averages across all subject areas and grade levels. This is particularly concerning given that 100% of the students receive free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage. Interestingly, the nearby Kings Highway Elementary, Caln Elementary, and Reeceville Elementary schools, which are also part of the Coatesville Area School District, generally outperform East Fallowfield Elementary School on PSSA tests, suggesting that there may be specific factors contributing to the lower performance at East Fallowfield.

Despite the higher spending per student at East Fallowfield Elementary School compared to the state average, the school's academic performance remains significantly below par. This suggests that simply increasing funding may not be the sole solution, and that other factors, such as teacher quality, curriculum, and school leadership, may play a crucial role in improving student outcomes. The school's declining statewide ranking and underperformance compared to nearby schools within the same district indicate the need for a comprehensive, data-driven approach to address the root causes of the school's struggles and implement effective strategies to improve student learning and achievement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have had a great experience with my 2 children at East Fallowfield! The teachers are wonderful and very responsive plus manage to do a lot with very little (in terms of resources). The PTO is is very involved in helping provide educational resources and opportunities for the students to learn and grow. Many teachers have interactive whiteboards and devices for student use due to the parental involvement. It is truly a community that cares! I know the numbers do not look great but decades of mismanagement and loss of funding is difficult to overcome. Parental involvement is such a key to student success in any school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
